83 Subaru Leone 4dr 4WD – CD Player Install

Installing a CD player in an old Subaru isn’t as easy as other cars. Subaru obviously decided to be mindless drones when they made it so the space between the console and heater box as too small to fit a standard depth radio of the time and now cd player. Using the Sedans console piece I made a spacer for the CD player out of wood because it is easy to work with. I then… Read More

83 Subaru Leone 4dr 4WD – Radius Rod Mod

As said in my Previous article, Fender Cutting, I installed custom adjustable radius rods. This is to change the horrid negative caster to positive. Here is a picture that try’s to explain why this is a good mod. So now you know why, this is how I done it: I got radius rods from a 81 Toyota Crown which is a Sixth generation. But these being only available in Australian, Japan and some UK areas… Read More

83 Subaru Leone 4dr 4WD – Fender Cutting to fit Kumho 27×8.5R14’s

Because I decided to do this project without a lift kit I needed to do a lot of fender cutting. The main reasons for this was to be original, affordable and I can fit the tyres without a lift so why? Luckily because of my custom radius rods the tyres fit in without rubbing the back of the fender wall (where you feet are). Unluckily the wheel sits to far forward now and rubs on… Read More

83 Subaru Leone 4dr 4WD – 5 Speed Manual 4WD Conversion

Because the Leone Sedans only came in 2WD here I had to convert it to 4WD. I decided on using the standard 4WD torsion bar out of a EA81 style Wagon because they are a direct bolt in and have more suspension travel then the EA82 style coil over swing arm setup. I also decided on using a 5sp D/R EA82 gearbox because they have better gearing, better low range and a fifth gear for… Read More

83 Subaru Leone 4dr 4WD – The idea

This is the first page in collection of pages about my 83 Subaru Sedan. This page describes the plan before I got it and I’ll show you a picture of when I got it. The idea was to use a EA81 style Coupe body and the 4WD gear from a Wagon. But when time came to buy this new Subaru it came clear that finding a Coupe in good condition for cheap wasn’t going to… Read More

Modify your Stock 2BBL Hitachi Carburetor (ea81)

Written by TheSubaruJunkie Subaru4WD.net I’ve done this modification to my carburetor with great results in acceleration and highway speed’s. This modification may impact emissions results so if you need to pass emission tests in the future you might want to get a spare carburetor from the Junk Yard to perform this operation on. NOTE: This modification will only work on the EA81 series Hitachi’s. Although the same modification is possible for the EA82 Hitachi’s, I… Read More

Rear Disc Conversion on EA81 & EA82’s

Written by TheSubaruJunkie Subaru4WD.net Installing Rear Disk Brakes All Non-Turbo Subaru’s come equipped with rear drum brakes… while all Turbo EA82 Subaru’s come with rear disk brakes. Wouldn’t it be nice to swap those ancient drum brakes with some nifty rear disk’s?? Well, you can Even your EA81 Subaru can use the rear disk brakes off of any EA82T Subaru. I recently did the conversion, and here’s how its done. First off, lets tell you… Read More

VSS (vehicle speed sensor) fix for EJ conversion

One of the things you encounter when doing an EJ conversion to your EA81 Subaru is the VSS problem. EA81’s never had speed sensors expect for in the US and some other countries, so it’s best to look at the speedo you have before worrying too much. This is just one solution to the problem, but it’s easy and I believe won’t cause a problem. First off you need a EA82 speedo from the cluster…. Read More

Fuel System for EJ22 converted EA81’s

Just as a note, there are quite a few different types of original setups for the carbed EA81. These changed through the evolution the EA81 had from 80 to 94. Your system may not have a return line. The original fuel system in my Brat had 3 lines coming from the engine bay through the cabin door trim and into the back. These lines consist of a 3.2mm return fuel line, a 6.3mm tank vent… Read More

EJ22 conversion Exhaust System

Getting the exhaust perfect is a very important part on an offroad Subaru. It needs to be able to tuck up under the body as close as you can get it to avoid damage. The stock Subaru Liberty/Legacy Y-pipe (headers) doesn’t fit the EA81 style chassis and gearbox crossmember very well. To get it to fit here’s what we had to do: Cut the left pipe in two places. First the front part just after… Read More

Fitting the EJ22 Subaru engine into a Subaru Brumby/Brat

This is the relatively easy part of the EJ conversion. Lets start with the engine crossmember. On the older EA81 cars you need to slot out the two holes for the engines mounts about 8mm towards the outside of the car on each side. On the EA82 cars you don’t need to do this as far as I know. Now that you have done this, the engine will bolt right in, except for the gearbox/transmission…. Read More

Welding the R160 in the rear of your Subaru Welded Subaru Diff

This is a very popular mod for offroading a Subaru. Because of the lack of aftermarket parts for these great little four wheel drives we have to resort to doing things are selves. Which I think is great, because you can say exactly what you have done to your car while others are left just saying “well the shop done this, but I have no idea how they done it.” The idea of welded your… Read More

Subaru 6 Stud Conversion

Old Subaru’s have always had a problem with what wheels you can fit to them. Because most cars use 4×100 Stud pattern and most 4×4’s use 6×139.7 Stud pattern it makes fitting any good wheels to the subie’s 4×140 Stud pattern difficult. Unless you have plenty of money to burn on some custom mags. But… There’s a solution to the problem. It’s so simple it’s just crazy that only a few old gen Subaru owners… Read More

Indoor 6.5″ Speaker boxes

I needed some good sound. So what could be better then 2 6.5″ speakers in BOXES (speakers sound shite without boxes!) So I got out my cardboard and made a template of the shape the box needed to be. Grabbed the 12mm MDF board and started cutting.   The Speaker spaces I got needed something to screw to. Also it couldn’t be to thick as that would intrude onto the door trim to much. I… Read More
