Title: Future project: desert racer/comp truck
Post by: Roger on September 01, 2008, 07:37:08 PM
Lesscroft's thread about what to do with $8,000 got me thinking.  I have been becoming a fan of the BAJA desert race trucks and would like to build something similar oneday, I was wondering what vehicle to start with? any ideas?

I've been thinking something with IFS and trailing arm solid rear, maybe a pajero chassis with a ute body of some kind??

well my instant reaction to that would be get a hilux because they are IFS with solid rear and its easy to get V8 adaptor kits for them. The issue comes in when you start looking at suspension. Those BAJA trucks have massive suspension travel to allow for the jumps they do. no matter how much u spend on lift kits, springs and shocks, you will never get close to what is required. It has to be coil over IFS with very very long wishbones. On that note, if you want it to be good i would say start with a good solid chasis, like a hilux or patrol and customise. As far as clearance on BAJA trucks goes they dont have heaps but what they do have they achieve with tyres rather than suspension. The advantage I see here is you can have relatively flat suspension which means no nasty CV joint angles. It also allows for softer springs and massive negative travel.
All this being said i have seen plenty of navara's, tritons and hilux based baja trucks.
From what i know, you prefer your projects to be unique so i am thinking a front end heavy, mid engine 4cylinder turbo using a front wheel drive engine to escape the trasfer case issue. problem with that is making a mid engine car with a soid rear axel front end heavy. if you dont you will find yourself point at the sky while air born (or so you told me).
I think my final thought is a strange one but has potential. You could pick up an old holden V8 ute for cheap, slap a 4wd gear box on it, get rid of the standard front suspension and build something of your own to accomodate tyres and suspension and wack a diff in the front end. A coil over conversion for the rear diff would be fun but definately do-able.
The only cars i know with coil over rear and independant front would be a surf, pathfinder or frontera.
its a tricky one for sure but i think on a budget the V8 ute would be a good starting place

after all that, if its a  baja truck, u dont really need 4wd, just a tight LSD or locked rear diff. then you could just get a V8 ute, take the body off, make a roll cage and put the big tyres on, plus all the suspension stuff, but keep it simple

Front suspension travel is fixed with longer driveshafts, control arms, etc.
Converting torsion bar to coil shouldn't be hard. But converting rear leaf to coil is a little harder.
I like the idea of a Nissan ute as it uses the front diff in the middle which means longer shafts = more travel. But then you can convert just about anything to have a centre mounted diff. I'd say not so much on the hilux as they do sit a lot higher then all the others and this is bad for a racing truck.

Go the Rodeo!
IFS, Solid rear (could steel coil set up off MU along with disks to make) low, light and tough

been looking at kerb weights and it looks like my best bet is to start with a ute because they are lighter, something around 1500kg would be a good starting point, maybe even a datsun 720 4x4?
