Title: Camper trailer for a Subaru...
Post by: Phizinza on July 26, 2013, 06:20:01 PM
I'm thinking about building a camper trailer. A super lightweight one...

I'm still playing around with my Chinese Tig welder but I'm confident I should be able to tig up some ally!

I'd like to make it small, to fit a 1400x2400(1200 folded) roof top tent. A couple of draws for kitchen and bathroom stuff. And of course a tow point!

I'd like to use the 16" alloy rims and same tyres that my car will run but I don't believe I will need brakes (saves on weight!).

Looking to make the body of it about the same size as the roof top tent. Just wondering about suspension. I want it to be independent. Thinking I could make my own swing arms but the hubs is what is really puzzling me. Maybe I could just buy something? What is out there? I'd like shockers and airbags instead of springs (adjustable left and right height). I've seen those rubber swing arm suspension/hub kits but that would not give me airbags...

I'm having a guess that I should be able to make the trailer weight 150kg, 40kg for the wheels and tyres plus from what I can see 60kg for the tent. Add gear and I'm at 300kg which I think is fine. Plus maybe a 50l water tank to bring it up to 350kg. Shouldn't be a worry behind the car, even offroad I reckon.

Thoughts?

Why not use the rear end of an L series or an MY?  The MY has the bonus of the torsion bar so no need for springs unless you want it stiffer - you will need a good set of shocks though.  My ute tub trailer needs a new set of shocks - it's very bouncy when stationary, but great to tow with - especially with delicate loads.

Worth the effort, especially if you can weld alloy.  I don't know what alloy materials will do what so I'm in the dark in that area!

Since I sold the Outback I decided on using an L rear end. Picked up a 2wd Vortex rear end with brakes for $98. I won't use the brakes but thought using 2wd disc brake hubs would save on weight.

Its a pretty heavy unit, but once i strip it down it should be ok. I plan on ruining air bags and shocks, so i can have left and right adjustable height.

How's this progressing?  Slow/stand still?

I know the feeling :(

Stand still. I don't even have the money to buy primer for the ute!

Still at a stand still?  Or have plans changed direction?

I've moved away from the Trailer project. I've decided what would work better for us is a roof top tent on two hoop bars in the tray. I've even worked out I have space for my Rola basket up above the roof too...

Nice.  I love roof top tents.  Got a particular model in mind?

We just got a roof pod recently and it had a ride on Ruby Scoo - with a lawn mower and jerry can strapped on a second set of roof racks :D

Just one of those generic 1400x1200mm fold out soft covered ones.

I like the idea of a bed 2400mm long... hahaha

You can't go wrong with a quick setup and pack down bedding. It's our only downer on our touring setup at the moment.

I've been thinking about a camper trailer again too. Time will kill it but I can dream.  I would like to build it in a gutted rear half of an L wagon only for looks. I've been looking at those campers that flip the lid to open up the tent and give you the bed on the flipped lid, kitchen/dining on the trailer. Would be small but the bed size would be good for a small family. Plus the trailer would give better weight distribution across the vehicle.

My only issue would be sand 4wd'n as I don't reckon the subi would be up for that - she has enough fun moving through sand as it is. A better tyre choice would probably help in this too. Maybe a supercharger as well :p

Anyway, pipe dreams!

Mmmm. Pipe dreams.  A rear end L trailer would look good especially if you match the colours.  But yes sand towing wouldn't go well.  MTs suck in sand really,  unless its dune climbing
